We were proud to be the full sponsor of the 20th HonorAir trip to Washington, D.C., which made it possible for 187 veterans of WWII, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War to visit various memorials in our nation’s capital and receive a much deserved “thank you” from officials there. There was a beautiful American Airlines charter aircraft to fly the veterans to Washington and top rate tour buses, which met them at the airport and transported them to the various sites for their visits. Upon their return on Wednesday night, they were greeted by over 1,000 friends and family, a Naval Band, and the Central High School Band, all celebrating their return and once again thanking them for their service to our country.
We at Holston Gases are very proud to have sponsored this trip as we have had many veterans and reservists work with our company over the years. Additionally, our co-founder, Pat Baxter, served in WWII as a Glider Pilot, flying several missions in Italy. He successfully made it back from the war and made a success with our family owned business, and therefore we consider this HonorAir trip to be sponsored by “one of their own.” Bill Baxter told the veterans at their departure, “It all comes full circle, and one of your own is sponsoring this trip. We know he would be proud!”

Today was the end of an era. Gene French has earned a much deserved retirement after 38 years with Holston Gases. In 1989 I had the misfortune of competing with Gene in this marketplace. If I walked into a Holston account and they told me Gene was their contact, I learned very quickly to thank them for their time – turn around and leave because I didn’t have a chance. Gene personifies professionalism and class. Everyone that came in contact with him was enriched by his kind demeanor. In my 25 years with Gene I have NEVER had anyone make a negative comment about him – don’t know of anyone else I can say that about. Although Gene will not be physically present at Holston Gases his impact will be felt for decades as the next generation – who soaked in his wisdom – takes over leadership of this company. To many people Gene IS Holston Gases. Thank you Gene -Robert Anders, Presidet/CEO
Gene French, the longest-serving employee in Holston Gases’ history, retired recently at age 81. If we had a Holston Gases Hall of Fame, Gene would be in it. If we had a Mt. Rushmore, Gene would be on it. He is, without question, one of the most valuable and influential people who have ever worked here. His tenure spans three generations of ownership, and he has been one the keys to the consistency and the personality of our sales and customer service. We would not be the company we are today without Gene French. We will be forever grateful for the honor and privilege of working side by side with “Geno.” He’s made every one of us better for our time with him. -Bill Baxter, Chairman, Holston Gases
